The True Value of Polyhistor as a Manufacturing Partner

At Polyhistor, we believe we’re a bit different from other manufacturers and CNC machine shops. And that difference shows up even in the terminology we use – we like to think of everyone we do business with as our partner instead of just a “customer.”

But is there really a distinction, or are these just words? Our actions show that we go the extra mile to create a more valuable relationship. Here are 3 ways we prove our value as a manufacturing partner:

Engineering-Based Manufacturing to Stop Issues Early

At Polyhistor, we have a wide variety of capabilities, from 3D printing services to precision machining. But our original training is actually in engineering. Our founder and president, Peter Schönning, has multiple engineering degrees, and spent years working in product design and engineering before founding Polyhistor in 1999.

Now, we use our background to help our partners bridge the gap between manufacturing and engineering. These are two very different disciplines, and often there can be engineering choices that lead to manufacturing challenges and higher prices as a result. We use our engineering knowledge to conduct proactive design reviews where we identify issues with the products very early.

For instance, one of our partners recently sent over drawings that looked, at first glance, detailed and comprehensive. But we always conduct a more thorough analysis to be certain we don’t miss any subtle problems. We soon spotted several features that could create manufacturing issues. Because of our engineering knowledge, we were able to explain the issues and help to suggest alternatives.

Transparency to Improve Reliability

Our engineering background allows us to quickly catch many potential issues when we receive designs. And it’s our belief in honesty and transparency that leads us to always alert our partners and help find the best solution.

For instance, on occasion, we receive designs for parts that we know will not fit together properly. Other shops may just make the parts as designed, considering it the engineer’s problem to deal with when the results are shipped back. But we always alert our partners to these issues because, frankly, we have a hard time sleeping at night knowing something isn’t right!

That type of transparency extends to everything we do. When it comes to production, deliveries, and scheduling, we strive to be as clear as we possibly can. We know that your timelines are crucial, and that’s why we emphasize reliability as one of our core values.

Meticulous Work for Better Outcomes

Our engineering expertise and transparency in communication, in turn, enable better outcomes for our partners. They ensure quality products, on-time delivery, and reduced costs.

For instance, we often note tight tolerances on drawings and suggest that they may not be needed. We’ll discuss the tolerance with our partners, who agree and make a simple change. It’s a quick tweak that’s easily done.

But consider the alternative: a shop only quickly glances at the drawings and gives a customer a quote, charging a high price because of the tolerances. When they go to make the part, they discover the tolerance is extremely difficult to actually achieve, leading to delays and late delivery as they struggle to make quality parts. That leaves all parties in a difficult spot.

At Polyhistor, our proactive approach ultimately fosters trust, strengthens our partnerships and produces better results.
