Laser cutting is a versatile manufacturing capability known for its speed and precision. It’s ideal for anything from prototyping to high-volume production. At Polyhistor, we offer in-house laser cutting and laser engraving services from our precision machine shop in Jacksonville, Florida.
Versatile Laser Cutting Capabilities
When customers need laser cutting services, we rely on two pieces of equipment, depending on the project:
- A low-powered laser cutter ideal for non-metallic materials, such as plastics and rubbers
- A high-powered laser cutter ideal for metallic materials, such as stainless steel and aluminum
While laser cutting is compatible with many different material types, we avoid certain materials, like PVC, which emit harmful gasses. If you have any questions about the material you’re planning to use, just ask us!
Major benefit: operational flexibility
In addition to the more obvious benefits like speed and precision, one of the reasons our precision machine shop loves laser cutting is that it allows for incredible flexibility compared to alternative methods like die cutting.
Die cutting, which involves custom tooling, is a great solution for high volumes of parts with finalized designs. However, if you need a low volume of parts or anticipate mid-production revisions, laser cutting is a much more cost-effective approach. Setup is fast and easy for low volumes, and in the event of revisions, we can simply adjust the machine’s programming and continue with production.
Unique Laser Cutting Applications
Our precision machine shop is always seeking innovative and creative solutions to manufacturing challenges, so it’s not surprising that we’ve found some interesting ways to use our laser cutters. Here are just a few examples…
Laser cutting for custom packaging
Polyhistor custom-makes reusable packaging [link to Cost-Reduction Strategies Engineers May Not Consider] for certain mass-produced products, a sustainable solution that facilitates easy transportation and reduces costs. Our low-powered laser cutter can deftly cut the foam materials commonly used in custom packaging.
Laser cutting for precision targets
Our shop produces 6,000 small mylar targets annually for one of our customers, and laser cutting is undoubtedly the best method for cutting these precise products.
Laser cutting for rubber gaskets
Previously, we purchased thousands of rubber gaskets annually for one of our customers’ applications. We realized it would be much more cost-effective to make the gaskets in-house, so we now cut them from thin rubber sheets using our laser cutter.
Laser engraving services
Our laser cutters are also capable of engraving various metals, plastics, and other materials. We commonly engrave brand names, logos, and serial numbers upon customer request.
